Geography of Elmira, New York

Elmira is located at 42°5′23′′N 76°48′34′′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city covers 7.6 square miles, of which 7.3 square miles are land and 0.27 square miles (3.56%) are water.

The Chemung River flows through the city to the east. Elmira is built almost entirely in the flood plain of the Chemung River and has experienced numerous floods, the worst of which occurred in 1972 as a result of Hurricane Agnes. The northern-flowing Newtown Creek meets the Chemung River in the southeast corner of the city.

As of the 2000 census, the city was home to 30,940 people, 11,475 households, and 6,701 families. There were 4,229.5 people per square mile of land. There were 12,895 dwellings at a density of 1,762.7 per square mile on average.

There were 11,475 households, of which 31.1% included children under 18 years old, 35.3% were married couples living together, 18.4% had a female householder without a husband present, and 41.6% were non-families. 34.5% of all households were comprised of individuals, and 13.6% of those individuals were aged 65 or older and living alone. Average household size was 2.37 people and average family size was 3.05 people.

25.1% of the city's residents were under the age of 18, 13.0% were between the ages of 18 and 24, 29.9% were between the ages of 25 and 44, 18.2% were between the ages of 45 and 64, and 13.8% were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 33 years old. There were 101,2 males for every 100 females. There were 98.2 males for every 100 females aged 18 and over.
